Design for a plate to J. C. Lavater’s, ‘Essays on Physiognomy’, translated by Henry Hunter, London, 1789–1798, vol.III.ii., facing pp.366–367. In the published text Lavater makes a comparison between the top three profiles as to their virtues. The bottom two, however, ‘approach to folly’; wherever an arch of the nose is exaggerated or lengthened, there can be found mental derangement.
