This is one of a large number of works that Boudin painted during and following his 1871 visit to Antwerp (Anvers). Many of them feature the same view of the busy port, with the cathedral in the background. This work however hones in on the small boats that are docked on the river Scheldt. The painter deftly captures the choppy waters and rapidly moving grey clouds, using a very limited palette and pure oil paint, thickly applied.
