Born in Dalry, George Houston was educated at Saltcoats Public School and Glasgow School of Art. During his life he painted many pictures of his native Ayrshire, including a few of Saltcoats harbour. He was a prolific landscape painter, using both oil and watercolour.

According to the Royal Scottish Academy’s eulogy on his death Houston's landscapes were, 'amongst the finest landscapes produced in Scotland'. Houston had a life-long passion for fishing which influenced his choice of painting grounds – Ayrshire, Argyll and Iona were his favourites, with occasional depictions of other areas of Scotland. Sadly, the area this painting depicts remains unknown.
