A fireman gazes upwards, shading his eyes from the heat or brightness of a fire. He holds his helmet in readiness for immediate action and is depicted assessing the narrow boundary between safety and danger, risk and sacrifice. He is deliberately placed at the very edge, the forward edge, of the plinth. The work was moved from Counterslip where Avon Fire Service Regional Headquarters were once situated.
