The artist, John Milne Donald, was known for his landscape painting. Born in Nairn in 1819, little is known of his academic achievements, but he showed an interest in art from a young age and spent time in Paris and London before returning to Scotland. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts but his work was not fully appreciated until after his death in 1866.
