Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, was Grand Master of the Antients Grand Lodge, one of two governing bodies of Freemasonry in England in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, in 1813. In this portrait he is wearing a field marshal’s uniform with a breast star of a Knight the Order of the Garter, the highest chivalric order in the United Kingdom, and a collar of a Knight of the Order of Saint Patrick, the highest chivalric order in Ireland. The portrait is a replacement of an original that was destroyed in a fire at Freemasons’ Hall, London in 1883.
