This painting of Felix Ames is typical of the artist's style, showing the boy against a dark background and with deep set eyes cast in shadow.

The painting is one of a group of five portraits transferred in 1978 to English Heritage by descendants of the Cadogan and Ames family of Brinkburn Priory. The Manor House where they once hung is no longer furnished, and all the Ames portraits are in store.

James Sant was a highly successful and prolific society portrait painter and was appointed 'Principal Painter in Ordinary to Her Majesty' in 1871, about the time this portrait was completed.
