The castle on the headland in the background is Pendennis Castle and the ship in the foreground is HMS 'Ganges', which was moored in Falmouth from 1866 to 1899.

The artist Hemy lived in Falmouth from 1881. HMS 'Ganges' appears in several other paintings by Hemy from 1886, including 'The Smelt Net and Falmouth Natives' owned by Falmouth Art Gallery.
