'Evening' shows a woman and girl wearing head-scarves kneeling over a basket containing several hens. The colourful background makes use of a bright ruby red ground and rich blue sky with moon and stars. This panel was made in 1933 and is a replica, with some details changed, of a window made for a school in Utersen, Germany. When the Nazis rose to power in Germany, Jewish Hungarian-born artist Ervin Bossanyi (1891–1975) emigrated to England taking these panels with him as an example of his work. Bossanyi is perhaps best known for his work in stained glass, with windows in Canterbury and Washington Cathedrals, and the New West End Synagogue. He was also a versatile designer who worked in many media – sculpture, metalwork, ceramics – as well as being a prolific painter.
