Classicist and archaeologist Prof. Gardner was the Director of the British School at Athens, 1887–1895. He was the first Public Orator of the University of London, 1910–1932, and served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts, 1905–1909 and 1913–1915, and later Vice–Chancellor, 1924–1926.
