This painting was commissioned for the new Gaskell Building, at Brunel University in 2002, housing the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences. The building was opened and the painting unveiled by the Right Honourable Chris Smith, MP, then Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Bennett began his research for the painting by looking at depictions of Elizabeth Gaskell and was particularly inspired by a drawing by George Richmond, made in 1851. Other useful references were found in various Pre-Raphaelite and Victorian paintings, particularly the use of rose-pink colour, Rose Madder. The artist also visited Knutsford, Cheshire, which is thinly disguised as 'Cranford' in Gaskell's book, and appears as the background to this painting.
