Elgar's statue is positioned so that he is looking at the cathedral that he loved and where he would conduct during the Three Choirs Festival. The accompanying brass tablet was laid in 1984 on the 50th Anniversary of the composer's death. He is shown standing in suit and robes with hands behind his back and the work is mounted on a four-step base.
