Male portrait, three-quarter length, seated. He is a dark haired young man with a small moustache and a pointed beard. He is dressed in a black tailcoat, waistcoat and trousers, with a white shirt and a large black bow tie. He leans on the arm of the red upholstered chair in which he is seated. He holds in his left hand a wooden palette, two brushes and a mahl stick, which runs diagonally left to right. In his other hand, which rests in his lap, he holds another brush. The subject looks to the upper right of the picture. The background is dark green.
