This painting shows novelist Edith Olivier lying on her day bed in the back garden of her home, the Daye House on the Wilton Estate, Wiltshire. There is a table with books on it to one side and she is wearing a wide-brimmed muslin hat.

In her journal, Olivier remembers that she had to move during painting because the sun was so dazzling.
