Having been scourged and crowned with thorns, Christ is presented to the people with Pontius Pilate's words, 'Behold the Man' (John 19: 4–5). The inclusion of a cross is more common in northern European paintings. Formerly attributed to Simon Vouet and then to various French artists, this painting is by an artist working in Rome, perhaps in the circle of Luigi Garzi. Recently an attribution has been suggested to Nicolò Ricciolini (1687–1772), whose early work displays the same crowded compositions and over-emphatic gestures.
