William James Müller was the son of a Polish refugee and a well-travelled oil painter and watercolourist. In 1834–1835 he travelled up the Rhine to Switzerland and Italy and was particularly impressed by Venice. He also visited Turkey on an archaeological expedition. He died of a heart condition at the early age of 33.
