With a lifelong devotion to capturing the industrial heritage of the Clyde, Watt could often be found painting outdoors at the docks and shipyards around Greenock and Port Glasgow. The use of a dark palette helps to capture the grit and grime of an industrious East India harbour with the cranes of Scott’s shipyard towering above in the distance. Watt encourages the viewer to take their eyes on a journey around his paintings following lines of perspective and the verticals of masts and cranes, leading the eye on to the next area of the painting.
