Emily Shanks was born and brought up in Moscow. She volunteered to interpret for a group of British Doctors visiting Russian hospitals: here she shows women medical students examining a child.

Women studied medicine at Moscow University from the 1870s so that villages which could not afford male doctors’ wages could employ someone with medical training.

Emily Shanks studied at Moscow School of Art, and exhibited there and in London. Her sister and brother-in-law Louise and Aylmer Maude, translators of Tolstoy’s works, lived near Chelmsford from 1897.
