The 'Lane', a rough track, crosses the picture diagonally along which walk two groups, two women walking together and a woman carrying a small child with an older child waking alongside. The picture divides horizontally and the horizon has the profiles of heavy industry and chimney stacks punctuating the skyline, dotted within which there are bright pinpoints of light. The lane curves round and is echoed by a line of telegraph posts extending into the distance at right. The land on either side is broken and barren. A moon, pale and partly obscured by cloud sits in the darkening sky.
