Sephton was a painter of rural and genre scenes who exhibited eight works at the Royal Academy, including this one. It typifies the kind of sentimental painting which was popular in Victorian England. The Victorians valued purity and innocence above all else, reflected in the white dresses the girls are wearing and the family of ducklings they are observing.
