French artist Harpignies had close connections with the Barbizon School of artists that included Jean-François Millet, Charles-François Daubigny and Jules Dupré in its ranks. These artists settled in Barbizon near the forest of Fontainbleau to study painting from nature. They were the last precursors of Impressionism and were influenced by the realism of Dutch 17th-century landscape and, to a lesser degree, Constable.
