There are two elements to Kate Malone’s work: the bronze drinking fountain, which weighs a quarter of a ton, and the brick paving on which it stands. Water spouts from the open mouths of two fish in the central basin. They emerge from a pattern of waves forming six curves at the upper rim. A button, concealed as the eye of a fish on the side of the fountain, releases the water. Relief decoration covers the central form and this divides into three sections. At ground level is the hull of a wooden boat with three tobacco leaves above the prow. A castle tower, with battlements, emerges from the boat and there are two doors, one to port and one to starboard. A ship, castle and fish are the essential components of Bristol’s thirteenth century seal and modern coat of arms.
