This work depicts Pednevaden Point from Porthcurnick on the Roseland Peninsula, Cornwall. Insoll painted the work en plein air using a pochade box. Insoll, like John Constable, has the ability to capture the atmosphere of the moment, and the fluidity of the painting perfectly captures the drama of the day.

When he first painted the scene he was unhappy with it and did not number the work for his records. In his diary of that day he commented: ‘6.10.93 Porthcurnick – Marvellous skies all morning. Tried to capture the drama in two small sketches. Very frustrating’. Thankfully he gave the small painting, known as a pochade to the artist Grace Gardner who had admired it in his studio and it was donated to the Falmouth Art Gallery Collection as part of the Grace Gardner Gift.
