Joseph Warton (1722–1800) was educated at Oriel College, Oxford, before entering the church. He was Headmaster of Winchester College between 1766 and 1793 and an accomplished poet. This portrait was painted and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1777, the year in which Warton was also elected to 'The Club'. He was the brother of Thomas Warton, the Poet Laureate, whose portrait Reynolds also painted (Trinity College, Oxford; Mannings 2000, no.1838).
