John King was a friend of the Bristol artists and took a fatherly interest in the wayward Edward Villiers Rippingille. By profession he was a surgeon but had also practised as an artist and had wide interests in literature, science, languages and the visual arts. He took part in the sketching excursions to Leigh Woods and the sociable evening parties, and his surviving letters often give us the most colourful descriptions of the artists.
