Dr Giles Roberts (1766–1834) developed an interest in medicine as a young man and became a successful chemist. He was known in those days as a ‘quack doctor’ before enrolling at Guys and St. Thomas’s medical schools enabled him to become an apothecary, surgeon and physician. He went on to gain an honorary MD. He set up his practice in East Street. Dr Roberts was particularly famous for providing inexpensive medicine and for giving it away to those who could not afford it. His most famous salve, ‘The Poor Man’s Friend’ was appropriately named.
