Alfred Swaine Taylor studied medicine at Guy's Hospital and St Thomas's Hospital and was appointed the first Lecturer in Medical Jurisprudence at Guy's Hospital in 1831, a post he held until 1878. His work on forensic medicine earned him notoriety and his association, as an expert witness, with some of the most famous Victorian murder cases. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1845.

He also developed the use of hyposulphate of lime as a fixing agent for photography.
