This eighteenth century pet portrait of a lapdog was originally on display at Gisburne Park, an 18th century country house in Lancashire owned by Thomas Lister (1723–1761). Lister ordered the panel along with several others from the glass painter William Peckitt (1731–1795) of York in March 1756. Peckitt was the most significant glass painter of this time, known across the country for his skilled enamel painting. He is known to have painted at least three other portraits of lapdogs.
