Traditional healers filled gourds such as this with the powdered or dried plant materials that were used during their healing rituals and practices. This dried gourd, harvested from a tropical fruit known as a calabash, was worn around the neck and filled with traditional medicines, to be used in healing rituals and to protect the wearer from harmful spirits.
