The painting shows the corner of Cleveland Street, Maple Street and Southampton Street in the Fitzrovia district of London. Sickert had studios in nearby Fitzroy Street, which crosses Maple Street. In 1907 he and a group of artists formed the Fitzroy Group, meeting to show their work on Saturday afternoons under the banner 'Mr Sickert at Home.' In 1915 Sickert returned to No. 8 to rent the former studio of Whistler, who had been his artistic mentor.
It was the studio where W. P. Frith made his famous painting Derby Day, and Gilman had a bedsit at 47 Maple Street.
