The subject is the demolition of the corner properties on the west side of Hanover Street at its junction with Rose Street, viewed from the south side of Rose Street, looking north-east, to make room for the Headquarters of the Edinburgh Savings Bank (later the TSB).

Designed by William Paterson of Oldrieve, Bell and Paterson, the Rubislaw granite building was hailed as 'one of the most sumptuous building projects of the post war period' and contained the largest steel beams in its framework used to that date in an Edinburgh building.

The demolition warrant for properties at 28–32 Hanover Street was granted in May 1938, the steel frame was erected by January 1939 and the new building was formerly opened on 26th August 1940. Contemporary newspaper reports on the demolition and the erection of the new structure therefore narrow the production date for the present work to 1938.
