This is the left panel of a Deesis (or Deisis) representation (Greek δέησις, 'prayer' or 'supplication'), as indicated by the Holy scriptures held by the principal figures. In Byzantine art it traditionally included the Virgin at left, Christ Pantocrator in the centre, and John the Baptist at right, sometimes with other saints and angels.
