This view is taken looking south up Deane Clough. Deane Church is mostly Late Perpendicular with an early tower dating from the fourteenth century. This is an early topographical work by Linton, a landscape painter born in Liverpool. Many of his early paintings were of the Lake District and northern England and drew on the example of Richard Wilson's carefully arranged compositions. He moved to London in 1817, three years before painting this picture, and there he turned to the more lucrative market for classical landscapes, peopled with figures from the poetry and history of ancient Greece and Rome.
