David Petrie came to Inverness from Dundee in 1874 to run the coal business of Thomas Muir & Son & Patton which he subsequently acquired in 1892, the business becoming D. Petrie & Co. He was elected to the Town Council and served as provost from 1922 to 1925. He was for many years a member of the Harbour Trust and was also a director of the Royal Northern Infirmary. David Petrie and his wife were strong advocates of temperance and did much to help the cause in Inverness and district.
