De László painted two images of Lloyd George in this year – the more formal portrait is in the Collection of Lord Devonport. Lord Dawson of Penn remarked at the time, that 'it was a perfect study of a man with the complaint from which Mr. Lloyd George was suffering at the time, and that only a great artist could have discovered what was invisible to others.' Lloyd George finally died of cancer in 1945. On asked what made a portrait, great de László replied: 'Sympathy between the artist and his sitter is essential... When the opportunity is afforded him to look into the mind and soul of his subject he can, if he is equal to his task, produce a portrait in which everyone will be able not only to recognize the physical features of the sitter, but to perceive also the deeper-lying qualities by which he is distinguished.
