David Remfry is a contemporary British artist with an international reputation. He is perhaps best known for his large-scale watercolours of people dancing, his landscapes of New York, and for the portraits of friends and residents he drew and painted while living at the infamous Hotel Chelsea in New York City between 1995–2016. This work is one of the numerous ‘Havana-inspired’ paintings Remfry produced after a trip to Cuba. Another in the series formed part of the Royal Academy’s gift to Her Majesty The Queen to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee – more than one hundred works on paper by the Academicians. Remfry was elected a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1987. In 2001 he was awarded an MBE for services to British Art in America, and in 2006 he was elected a Member of the Royal Academy of Arts where he was Professor of Drawing at the RA Schools 2016–2018.
