Two cubic plinths each support two columns on either side of the main door. The nine faces of the plinths carry a frieze of robed figures across them. North plinth: 'South Shields Encouraging the Crafts and Industries of the County'. Left face: female figure with a bushel of corn; female figure with a bowl of food. Front face: female figure with a dish; female figure with a small amphora; female figure with a box. Right face: female figure with a model of a ship; female figure with back-pack; female figure with model of a sailing ship. South plinth: 'South Shields and Municipality Promotes Labour and Encourages the Arts'. Left face: female figure playing violin; female figure holding a model of an ideal city hall, a la Bramante; female figure holding an open book.
