A life-size statue of a pitman or coal miner father and his son on the son's first day at work in the pit. There are 500 names of contributors engraved in granite around its four sides. There is a time capsule buried beneath sculpture, containing items from local schools. A plaque on the pavement in front of the sculpture states it is to be opened 2069.

inscriptions of 500 contributors, who each paid £25 towards cost of sculpture displayed on granite panels around the base of sculpture: HETTON MINING HERITAGE STATUE / REMEMBER WHERE WE CAME FROM. LIFE WAS VERY HARD FOR THIS YOUNG CHILD / SENT OFF BY HIS FATHER FOR HIS FIRST SHIFT AT THE PIT / THIS STATUES IS A TRIBUTE AND REMINDER OF THE HARD LIFE AND SACRIFICE OF ALL THE MEN, WOMEN / AND CHILDREN WHO BUILT OUR COAL MINING COMMUNITY.
