This is a version of the large-scale figure of 'Courage' by Thornycroft for the W. E. Gladstone Memorial in London (1905), bequeathed by Benedict Read (1945–2016). Read taught at the Courtauld Institute of Art and came to the University of Leeds in 1990 to direct the Master of Arts in Sculpture Studies.
