Arthur Stanley was Treasurer of St Thomas’ Hospital from 1917–1943. He served as a Conservative MP and was a senior member of the British Red Cross Society and served as Chairman of the Joint War Organisation of the British Red Cross Society and of the Order of St John of Jerusalem throughout World War I and World War II. Along with Dame Sarah Swift he was a co-founder of the College of Nursing (later the Royal College of Nursing). He was knighted in 1917. Stanley is shown seated in this half-length portrait seated and wearing a brown suit. He is seated on an old oak chair with a table to his right and a travel clock. On his lapel he wears the British Red Cross Badge of Honour, given to people who show exceptional service to the British Red Cross.
