This sketch, exhibited under this title at the Royal Academy in 1832, is for a large picture, commissioned by the British Institution, exhibited there in 1829 and presented by the BI to the Naval Gallery at Greenwich Hospital. It is now in the National Maritime Museum as part of the Greenwich Hospital Collection. It reimagines the moment at the Battle of Cape St Vincent on 14th February 1797 when Commodore Nelson and Captain Edward Berry led boarders onto the deck of the Spanish 'San José' (a 120-gun first rate), having already taken the 'San Nicolas' (74 guns), which lies between the 'San José' and Nelson and Berry's own ship, HMS 'Captain'. Both Spanish vessels were captured in what became known as 'Nelson's patent bridge for boarding first rates'.
