Anstey was poet and author of the ‘New Bath Guide’, a series of letters in satirical verse based on the social life of mid-18th-century Bath. This extremely popular work was first published in London in 1746 and had passed through 14 editions by the end of the century.

The portrait is in the style of John Simmons, a Bristol artist.
