Christ sits at a stone well beside a tree. A woman, seen from behind, has approached the well holding a water carrier. She is pointing down with her left hand and Christ is gesticulating, with right palm outstretched and a hand on his heart. The composition of the piece is close to a drawing by Michelangelo, the artist's contemporary. According to the biblical story Jesus, on the way from Judea to Galilee, comes to Jacob's well, outside the town of Sychar in Samaria, where he meets a woman. Traditionally, Samarians were not friends with Jews and this particular woman was known to be an adulterer. Jesus shocks her by requesting a drink and says: 'Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again. But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst.
