Painted in late 1539 for the Venetian nobleman Marco Pizzamano, this painting displays Bassano's interest in dramatic narrative and his knowledge of the art of Giorgione, Leonardo and Dürer. Christ engages in a learned discussion in the Temple of Jerusalem, bewildering the elders, who are so individually characterized that they have the appearance of portraits (Luke 2: 41–51).
