Inscription description
incised on south face of plinth: THE / CHORLEY / PALS / 1914–1919; incised on north face of plinth: SUEZ CANAL / 1916 / THE SOMME / 1916 1917 1918 / ARRAS / 1917 / HAZEBROUCK / 1918 / PLOEGSTEERT WOOD / 1918; on the other two faces of the plinth are incised the 221 names of the original Chorley Pals Company formed in 1914, along with the name of Lieutenant James Hitchen who was posted to the Chorley Company two weeks before the Somme attack in 1916.
