This portrait forms part of a montage of 46 unframed portraits of Chelsea Pensioners mounted 10 abreast in five rows as a single work. Joe was a good friend of Frank Chambers, also featured in this montage, and he spent a lot of time during the Second World War as part of Ghost Force, a unit responsible for a massive deception operation to divert German intelligence away from the true location of the second front in Europe. He attributes his longevity as one of the Royal Hospital's centenarians to good wholesome and clean living devoid of alcohol, but with a penchant for following the horses.
