This shows Chelsea viewed from the south side of the Thames in the mid-seventeenth century at latest, before the building of the Royal Hospital. It is one of two paintings bequeathed by Henry Hockey Burnell’s daughter to Chelsea Library in 1940, the other being of Chelsea Physic Garden seen from the Thames in the eighteenth century. Burnell was an architect with Chelsea-history interests but whether also a painter still otherwise unclear. It is possible both were simply in his possession, not by him, making the received attribution a case of confusion. If not by him, the artist(s) remain to be identified.
