Design for a plate to J. C. Lavater’s, ‘Essays on Physiognomy’, translated by Henry Hunter, London, 1789–1798, vol.III.i., facing p.246. In the published text, Lavater writes: ‘I know not by what chance the following portrait bears the name of Charles V.’ Other portraits, including Dürer's, ‘do not present the slightest trace of that open, graceful and animated physiognomy (here exhibited).’
