This picture is inscribed with the erroneous identification 'John Talbot, brother to Talbot of Rudge Warwickshire.' The sitter is Charles Talbot, 12th Earl and 1st Duke of Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury was regarded as the embodiment of the courtly aristocrat; he was unsuited to bureaucratic employment and was considered something of a hypochondriac. He was the first godchild of Charles II following the Restoration. In 1680, when Charles Talbot was 20, it was reported by the Dowager Countess of Sunderland that he had a 'blemish on one eye, that 'tis offensive to look upon it'. This was later removed and, although his eyesight was saved, he wore an eyepatch (this does not appear in known portraits). The dense modelling and shadow on the face as well as the terse description of pattern on the coat would suggest that this is not an autograph painting.
