C. R. Cockerell (1788–1863) was the first president of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), 1859–1861, to be a professional architect and had been the first winner of the RIBA’s Royal Gold Medal in 1848. He trained originally as a neoclassical architect and visited Turkey and Greece in his youth, studying antique buildings and making major archaeological discoveries. Once he was appointed surveyor to St Paul’s Cathedral in London, he developed a great appreciation of the work of Wren and his preferred building style became a rich Greco-Roman with elements of the Italian Renaissance and the English baroque. His father and son were also distinguished architects. The painter Sir William Boxall hoped to make his name as history painter but settled for the more lucrative commissions of portraits.
